What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue Massage Danville, CA

Many people get messages every day, and some of us may even get deep tissue massage, but most folks do not know the difference between this type of massage and a traditional one. The truth is, a lot of expertise goes into specific types of massages and getting a massage that presses into the deep tissue can have benefits that may not be apparent. Massages are a part of many things, such as a sports medicine clinic, rehab, and athletic training programs. They can improve overall wellness, which is why they are so commonly performed in various areas.

The difference between a regular massage and a deep tissue massage

There are a few key differences between a traditional or Swedish massage and one for deep tissue. The most notable difference for anyone who regularly gets traditional massages is that the intent of the massage is different depending on which one is performed. A massage for deep tissue may be given by a chiropractor or physical therapist instead of a masseuse.

A traditional massage is focused on relaxation. This may include using scent, lighting, and other moods to enhance the effects of the massage. The touch and pressure used in a traditional massage are typically very light and delicate as it is not meant to go deep into the body but to provide comfort.

The massage technique is meant to use long soft strokes across the skin's surface that help stretch and relax surface muscles and reduce stress.

Conversely, a deep tissue massage treats tension, muscle and body soreness, and other issues relating to injuries. While deep tissue is based on traditional Swedish massage, the methods change based on what is trying to be done.

For this reason, a massage into the deep tissue also uses long stroking movements across the body. Still, they are applied much more forcefully to massage further into the tissue. Surface messages do not reach the inner layers of muscle and connective tissue, whereas deep tissue goes further down.

The deep tissue technique also uses much more pressure, which some people may find uncomfortable, but is useful in helping improve several conditions and is often used in recovery, rehabilitation, and active exercise and training for athletes.

What can a deep tissue massage help with?

As we discussed, there are many reasons to get a massage for deep tissue. Most often, people who suffer from stiffness and soreness of muscles and ligaments use deep tissue to help relax the muscles and relieve the pain and soreness after heavy exercise and activity.

It can also help improve range of movement and flexibility. Massaging and applying the right amount of pressure to tendons and ligaments can help increase flexibility and elasticity to help reduce the risk of injury.

Lastly, a massage into the deep tissue is great for circulation and blood flow, which is crucial for continued activity and recovery from activity afterward and as well from an injury.
