What To Expect When Undergoing Cupping

Cupping has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of ailments and promote general good health and well-being. It is becoming a more popular alternative medical treatment in Western countries. It is also increasingly popular at spas and relaxation retreats. Here is what you can expect from a cupping session.

What to expect

Going to a first cupping session might be a little intimidating for people unfamiliar with the practice, but it can be a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. Understanding a little bit about the procedure can give first-timers some confidence going into the therapy session.

How it works

Cupping uses round cups, traditionally made of glass or earthenware. The therapist creates suction inside the cup using heat or a small bump. Heat is created inside the cup by placing a flammable substance, like alcohol, inside and lighting it. The therapist will extinguish the flame and strategically place the cup on the patient. As the heated air in the cup cools, it create suction, expanding blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the affected area.

If undergoing wet cupping, after the first round of suctioning, the therapist will remove the cups and use a sterile scalpel to gently score the skin. The cups are then replaced, and a second round of suctioning begins, drawing out small amounts of blood. The intent is to release toxins and harmful substances from the body.

The first session

Like acupuncture or massage, you will need exposed skin for cupping. Most commonly, therapists will give patients privacy to remove any clothing from the area being treated (most often the back) and lie down on a prepared table. When the patient is ready, the therapist will return and begin the session. During the first session, 3-5 cups might be used. A patient might request to begin with only one cup to get a feel for how they will respond to the treatment. The number of cups might increase up to seven in subsequent sessions. Red circular marks from the cupping will fade in a few days, so do not be alarmed.

Potential benefits

Some of the following conditions may show some improvement from cupping therapy:

  • Acne
  • Varicose veins
  • Pain
  • Arthritis
  • Migraines
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Eczema

Many people find cupping a positive complementary medicine, meaning they use it in conjunction with other medical treatments. It is also increasingly offered at spas for stress relief. Similar to deep tissue massage, cupping can release tension from tight muscles.

Side effects

Cupping is generally considered a safe practice. More care should be taken with wet cupping. A topical antibiotic and clean bandaging may be used directly after wet cupping to prevent skin infection. Other side effects might include bruising at the cupping sites and some discomfort.

Conclusion

Cupping is a relatively safe and simple therapy that may provide some health benefits as well as promote relaxation and tension relief. While modern practitioners may use updated equipment like silicone cups and rubber pumps to create suction, the essentials of the practice have not changed in thousands of years.
