What Are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has existed for thousands of years. Its origin can be traced to the Ancient Chinese practice of medicine, and it has endured ever since, with its popularity spreading throughout the world. Traditional benefits of acupuncture center on body metabolism, homeostasis mechanisms, the nervous system and the immune system.

The practice has evolved over time, and some of the traditional intentions have changed while others have persisted. The acupuncturist works by inserting thin fine needles at specific points to yield different effects.

The Ancient Chinese believed that health is a result of life forces known as "chi." An imbalance of the forces causes illness. Insertion of needles in the acupuncture points at various depths is said to reinstate the energy flow.

The practice of acupuncture remains controversial.

Benefits of acupuncture

1. Insomnia relief

When used in conjunction with alternative remedies, acupuncture helps treat Insomnia. After acupuncture therapy, patients report improved mental coherence, balance in energy flow and improved sleep.

2. Relieves migraines

One popular application of acupuncture is to relieve headaches and reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. In 2009, research carried out by The University of Munich Department of Complementary Medicine found that patients treated with acupuncture experienced better results than those in the control group

3. Lowers stress and fights depression

Stress is a major contributor to depression. Too much stress can lead to depression in certain people and is one of the reasons people seek acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture works to lower stress hormones, which in turn improves the patient's mood.

4. Fights addictions

Suppressing an addiction to nicotine is an intense undertaking, a difficult task and a physical ordeal that requires strength and patience to overcome. Acupuncture can be of help. It helps calm jitters, reduce cravings and promote lung tissue repairs by detoxing the body

5. Combats chronic pain

Pain manifests in different ways and parts of the body. Lower back pain is quite common. Acupuncture can help alleviate acute and chronic pain. Pain reduction and tissue repair are achieved by moderating the release of endorphins and encephalin, which are produced by the body to moderate pain. Increase in blood flow to major organs and body tissue brings oxygen, nutrients and hormones, thus increasing the healing process.

6. Faster recovery

Acupuncture benefits are indirect and best realized when used in combination with other remedies. According to research done by the National Cancer Institute, acupuncture helps increase immunity by boosting cell count, platelets and red blood cells after chemotherapy.

A study from the School of Medicine in Indiana University shows that acupuncture induces stem cell production, which helps repair tissues and tendons. The needles trigger the release of nitric oxide, which prompts blood circulation in blood vessels. This microcirculation helps carry oxygen and nutrients, which in turn reduce pain and inflammation.
